Make your own Photo Holiday Cards

Posted by klewis | Selling Art | Saturday 12 September 2009 5:18 am

Yesterday, Zazzle.com announced the addition of Customizable Photo Cards to their product list.

Zazzle’s a print on demand company, and I sell many of my designs and art through them. You can both shop their marketplace for t-shirts and other gift ideas, or open a free shop to make your own products to sell.

You don’t need to be an artist to make your own photo cards. Zazzle’s community of shopkeeper/designers already had uploaded ready-to-customize photo cards on every subject imaginable, including Christmas, weddings, birthdays, birth announcements and more. You just browse their marketplace, find a design you like, and upload your own photo.

But if you’re an artist, or super creative, you might want to design your own cards to send out this holiday season, or even to sell yourself! Here are a few I’ve already designed in my stores:

Today’s Best Award: Wine Connoisseur T-Shirt

Today’s Best Award on Zazzle for Wine T-Shirt

My two year old son is going through an extreme Mommy Separation Anxiety phase and as a result, I haven’t gotten much sleep in the last couple of weeks. He keeps waking up every couple hours crying “mommy rockie” and wanting to be rocked to sleep. I’ve tried instituting the “crying it out” policy again, but he’s older and a lot more stubborn about screaming —  at the top of his lungs — for an hour before giving up and passing out. All the screaming is giving me an ulcer, or at least, very bad indegestion and headaches and… you get the picture.

Last night he had me up until 5 a.m. All day I’ve been dragging around the house, looking at my ridiculously long to-do list, feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and discouraged.

But I got a much needed burst of good news in my inbox this afternoon. I uploaded a Wine Connoisseur t-shirt to my Koncepts by Karyn store today, and I was thrilled to find out that the design received a “Today’s Best Award” from Zazzle. What a much-needed boost of encouragement! You can see the ‘winning’ design below:

Do You Know About Spoonflower?

Posted by cgriffin | Selling Art | Tuesday 24 February 2009 11:05 am

Spoonflower.com offers print on demand fabrics for quilters, doll makers, fabric designs, crafters and anyone else interested in design and printing out custom fabrics. The site caters to people who love to do-it-yourself. The company is taking advantage of a growing interest in crafting that’s exploding in the blogosphere.

I have to say, what a great concept! Can’t find the right fabric for the accent pillows you need for your couch? Design them yourselves! Save your children’s art forever by sewing it into quilts.

I turned one of my designs into a fabric tile to test it out their uploading and design interface. It was easy to use, and the site has many great design options. You can upload single images or tile your art into a repeatable design. I haven’t ordered the fabric yet to test the print quality, but I definitely have some design ideas in mind for my son’s room. Additionally, the site offers a weekly “fabric-of-the-week” contest. Spoonflower members vote on their favorite design, and the winner’s swatch will be sold for one week through Spoonflower’s Etsy store. I’m off to submit my design in the contest right now. Wish me luck!

:D
